What is Hypnotherapy?
Let's start by explaining what hypnosis is.
Opinions vary on the exact definition of this natural state of mind. First of all, contrary to what many people believe, hypnosis is not always a trance state or a sleep state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. Hypnosis is a really natural state of mind and is an important part of everyday life. Whenever our mind wanders, daydreams or is focused on something, such as reading a book, driving a familiar route, watching a film we are in a state of hypnosis.
People who are in a hypnotic state slow down their brain waves from a Beta state to an Alpha state, sometimes in a deep trance this could also be to a Theta state. This is not dissimilar to the level of brain activity during meditation. (Definition from the NCH website 2012.)
So what is hypnotherapy?
In a January 2001 article in Psychology Today Harvard psychologist Deirdre Barrett wrote:
"A hypnotic trance is not therapeutic in and of itself, but specific suggestions and images fed to clients in a trance can profoundly alter their behavior. As they rehearse the new ways they want to think and feel, they lay the groundwork for changes in their future actions..." "The Power of Hypnosis" by Deirdre Barrett, Psychology Today, Jan/Feb 2001,
So hypnotherapy is the art of doing something theraputic for the client whilst in a state of hypnosis.

What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP looks at the way in which we think and process our thoughts
(Neuro), the language patterns we use (Linguistic) and our behaviours (Programming) and how these interact to have a positive (or negative) effect on us as individuals.
It is a collection of a wide range of methods and models which create an understanding of thought process and behaviour. Understanding these techniques can bring about a positive change in you and others. (Definition from the ANLP website 2012)
Everyone is unique, NLP is about understanding what's unique about you and working with it to help you achieve your goals. NLP can help people find ways to have better, fuller and richer lives.
