Mind Trick 1
Where are the 'goodies' kept? – Are you making it too easy? Make it so getting to them requires effort (the more the better), put them in a screw top jar, in the back of a cupboard or in the garage! And after eating one you have to put them back.
Why This Works: Humans, by nature, always go for the easy option, you won’t be tempted as often if you have to make a big effort to get to them.
Mind Trick 2
Have you ever been half way through eating a packet of biscuits before you realise you’re eating them? Sit in a different chair, change what you're saying to yourself, change the activity you're doing, change anything!!!
Why this works: This happens because our brains work on patterns, there’s a trigger and it rolls out the pattern without us noticing, when we change one of the key elements it disrupts the flow and our brain can't carry out the rest of the pattern.
Mind Trick 3
Make healthy stuff the easiest choice – This is the opposite of trick 1. How often do you just want a quick fix? Make the healthy choices the easiest. Get the fruit bowl right in front of you, peel the oranges and put them in the fridge etc. I even take the grapes of the stalks and put them in a bowl!!
Why this works: This turns the human nature of 'easiest option' in your favour. We want a quick fix you may be surprised just how much your heads don’t care what that is.
Mind Trick 4
Are you saying to yourself that points 1 or 3 won’t work because you like ‘it’ too much? That’s telling me that food answers an emotional need. This is often the case for most people.....I'll treat myself too x.....I've had a bad day I deserve x......It maybe you need something that makes you smile, to feel naughty, to treat yourself etc. Notice the emotion and find other ways to feed that emotion - that don’t involve food!
Why this works: Often we eat for an emotional need, it’s the need which needs sorting, how you do that is your choice, your head doesn’t actually care if it's food or something else. So long as the need is answered the mind is happy.
Mind Trick 5
Do you berate yourself with guilt, tell yourself you’re a bad person or that you have rubbish willpower? Research has proven that when people are happy they find it easier to make better decisions. So try being nice to yourself and see what happens.
Why this works: Hearing nice things makes us feel good, when we feel good we experience less of the emotions which make us feel low and therefore less of a need for a pick-me-up.
Mind Trick 6
A busy life means you’re less likely to eat 3 proper meals a day and when our energy is low we crave sugar. Have some healthy snacks in your handbag and/or car so you can eat these and keep those energy levels up without sabotaging your efforts with a sugary fix.
Why this works: Sugar is the quickest substance our bodies can turn into energy. When our energy is low our brains signal to find sugar to replenish the energy as quick as possible. Keep that energy topped up with healthy snacks and you won't crave the sweet stuff as often.
