Why this simple technique calms your mind
Imagine all the different actions our brains have to complete in any given day?
Walking, talking, opening, closing, holding, carrying, feeling, sitting, standing, lifting……………there’s a lot to remember.
Our brains make it easier by creating patterns eg doing x then leads to y and then z. Over time we practice and if we do something often enough our minds create a subconscious trigger which then runs that pattern of behaviour. Examples could be, the alarm going off, opening the office door, smelling that usual smell etc. Once the trigger is started the rest of the sequence follows.
We need this function to be able to live, it just wouldn’t be possible to think about every detail, we’d soon feel exhausted but the down side is we can fall into the trap of living life on autopilot.
This simple technique: Sit straight, take a deep breath and smile interrupts the conditioned pattern and gives you an opportunity to do something different. Notice the sunshine, hear the birds, smell the flowers, stretch and bring in that ‘Springy’ feeling.
The good news is it doesn’t have to take long, just a few moments really can alter your mood.
Go on try it……Sit up Straight, Take a Deep Breath, Smile.
Now enjoy your new found ‘Springy’ feeling.
